报告人简介:Nikhil Bhalla is an Assistant Professor of Electronics in the School of Engineering at Ulster University, UK. He also serves as the Director of the Electronic Engineering Department at City University, Qatar, a franchise of Ulster University. He is also currently the International Student Champion for the School of Engineering. His academic qualifications and training include first division B.E. Hons in Electronics & Instrumentation from BITS, Pilani, India; MS in Microelectronics & Applications from CYCU/NTHU Taiwan, PhD from University of Bath, UK following by Postdocs from University of Bath, UK and OIST, Japan. He also holds 2 year Post graduate qualification in Higher Education from University of Ulster, UK and is the Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) of UK. His research focuses on advancing transducer science, by utilising principles of nanoplasmonics, nanoscale acoustics, and electrochemistry to innovate the biosensor technology and investigate the solid-liquid interfacial properties of these transducers. His work has pioneered several innovative biosensing concepts/technologies, including detection of single protons associated with protein phosphorylation, plasmonic rulers for biosensing, highly sensitive and selective LSPR chips for cell study, for detecting viruses, bacteria, proteins, and nucleic acids. He has also developed platforms for biofilm detection/antibiotic susceptibility tests and sound generation from surface-bio interactions such as bacteria slipping, biofilm formations and protein sticking. In the past 5 years, he has published first authors/last corresponding articles in some leading journals including expert opinion inNature Nanotechnology; research articles inNature Communications, Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Nano, Small, Nano Letters, Nanoscale Horizons, Nanoscale, Analytical Chemistry, ACS Sensors(single author),ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces,Advanced Sensors Research(single author),Advanced Physics Research(single author) andBiosensors and Bioelectronicsto name a few. In 2022, 2023 and 2024, he was also ranked in the top 2% of researchers in Nanoscience, according to a list released by Stanford University, USA. He has attracted funds from EPSRC, BBSRC, DfE-Northern Ireland, UKRI-KTN, Royal Society, British Council, British Academy, Cancer Research UK, Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) UK, and industries in UK and Japan. He has also been awarded, BITS Pilani Young Achievers Award 2025, Nanoscale Emerging Investigator 2025, Ulster University’s Future Research Leader Award 2023 and multiple bursary awards from Royal Society of Chemistry and IEEE.

报告摘要:This talk presents advances in micro/nano active solid–liquid interfaces for biosensing applications. It introduces nanomaterials discovery and fabrication processes. Focusing on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) transducers, it examines physicochemical effects—friction, liquid slip, contact electrification, and temperature changes—at interfaces that can obscure sensor outputs. Highlights include high-throughput nanomushroom LSPR platforms for cell proliferation and biofilm imaging, integrated microfluidic LSPR chips for real-time PCR detection, and QCM-D studies of non-Newtonian slip behavior. Future directions involve mathematical modeling of plasmonic and acoustic signatures, disentangling surface and liquid effects, and developing acoustic libraries for bacterial diagnostics.
