报告人简介:

Dr. Yu Wang is a lecturer (equivalent to assistant professor) at University of Edinburgh, UK. Yu completed her MSc studies with a master’s degree in Peking University in 2017, investigating air quality in Beijing. In 2021, she received her doctorate with a thesis on the topic of secondary organic aerosol formation in smog chamber from the University of Manchester, UK. She worked on climate modeling of aerosol-cloud interactions as postdoc in ETH Zurich, Switzerland before She join University of Edinburgh in 2023. Dr. Wang’s research focuses on aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions, using a variety of tools including field measurements, lab experiments, numerical modelling, and machine learning approaches.

报告简介:

Aerosol-cloud interactions remain one of the largest uncertainties in IPCC report. The uncertainty in aerosol-cloud interactions mainly arises from differences in cloud schemes employed in various climate models. While climate models are tuned to match cloud observations from satellites, their projections diverge when it comes to different aerosol conditions, such as pre-industrial and future scenarios, due to various sensitivities embedded in different cloud schemes. Our recent collaboration work (Chen et al., 2022) combined machine learning with 20+ years of satellite data, identifying robust evidence that volcanic aerosol from the Holuhraun volcano in Iceland significantly increased cloud cover over the Atlantic Ocean. This provides a novel constraint for climate models. This presentation will introduce the intercomparison of this observational constraint with the climate model ECHAM6-HAM2 so that to know how we can improve it.
