Toeplitz matrices can be defined as matrices constant along the parallels to the main diagonal. Despite their simple definition, Toeplitz matrices appear in a variety of applications and illustrate various abstract results in linear algebra, complex analysis, and functional analysis. In this talk, I discuss three aspects of their theory: spectral theory, asymptotics of Toeplitz determinants, and applications to quantum spin chain models.

附:专家简介
Prof. Virtanen is the leader of the Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Analysis groups at the University of Reading, which he joined after his postdoctoral position at the Courant Institute, New York University. His research interests include operator theory, complex analysis, and applications to random matrix theory and quantum spin chain models in mathematical physics, and he is a leading expert in the study of Toeplitz and related operators and matrices. The work of Virtanen and his research group has been supported by grants from EPSRC, European Union, Leverhulme Trust, American Institute of Mathematics, London Mathematical Society, and Academy of Finland, and he currently serves on the editorial boards of four general and specialized mathematics journals.
