Lecture Topic: Alternatives to PinYin Romanization for Second Language Learners

Lecturer: Dr. Tyler Hougland

Time and Date: Wednesday 11 December 2019 at 2.00PM

Venue: Mingde S103

Introduction: Dr. Tyler Hougland received his Ph.D. from the Department of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology at the University of Louisville (Louisville, KY, USA) in 2013. During his time as a Graduate Research Assistant in Louisville, he studied at the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center(KSCIRC) under Dr. Jeffrey Petruska. Dr. Hougland’s studies at KSCIRC focused on cellular and anatomical plasticity of spinal cord neurons and their dorsal root ganglia sensory afferents (the relay for somatic input from the body). In his work he combined electrophysiological, molecular, and behavioral data to provide a complete picture of the innate electrochemical environment and subsequent changes after spinal cord injury(SCI). Following graduation, his interests shifted to the Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing aspects of Neuroscience. This prompted him to move to China in 2017, where he sought to learn Mandarin Chinese by being immersed in the culture and private study. He is now a Lecturer in English at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. and hopes to be able to eventually take the knowledge gained in China to Europe, where he can improve his spoken German proficiency and further his intellectual pursuits in the field of Computer Science. He is currently working on an alternative to the PinYin system of English Romanization, to facilitate language acquisition of both Mandarin Chinese and English speakers for the reciprocal benefit of their respective vernacular languages, and hopes to submit this work for peer reviewed publication in the near future.

NOTE: This lecture will contain unpublished private work. Due to intellectual property concerns, cameras or filming will not be permitted.
