Recently, theory of characteristic modes (TCM) attracts much interest in electromagnetism due to its strong ability to provide a convenient approach to determine the resonant behavior and get the modal solutions of arbitrarily-shaped objects, without considering specific excitation sources. The characteristic modes (CMs) were first defined and solved for perfectly electrically conducting (PEC) bodies by Garbacz et al. and Harrington et al. in around 1970s. Through much more efforts in developing the TCM for different structures consisting of different materials using different forms of integral equations, TCM has become a powerful tool for analyzing electromagnetic (EM) structures with clearer EM physics. This talk aims to address how to apply TCM to the design process of EM structures, such as platform integrated antenna design, antenna with complex background, and novel EM structures with special purposes, followed by possible areas that TCM can help.
